It seemed as though only minutes had gone by, but it had been three hours. Lacy’s cell phone buzzed on her nightstand. She opened her eyes and in a half-daze peered at the caller ID. She swiped to answer. “Hey. What’s wrong? What time is it?”

“I’m sorry, Lace. I needed to call you. It’s 3am, by the way.”

She slowly pulled up on the edge of the bed. “What’s happening, Aaron? Are you okay?”

“I’m fine. Listen, I have a lead on Graybear. I’m not positive, but I think I found where the messages are coming from.”

At this, she grew alert. “Wait. You found him?”

“No, not yet, but I’m close. I know it’s the middle of the night, but can I come over? I need to show you this.”

“Yeah. Of course. I’ll put on some coffee.”

“See you in twenty.”

Lacy stood and wrapped herself in a robe. The sun wasn’t even thinking of rising yet and Aaron was still wide awake, working away. He was worried for her and he worried enough for the both of them. She headed downstairs and into the kitchen, flipping on the small light over the sink. Coffee was only minutes away and she waited with mugs at the ready.

Her phone lit up with a text message. She picked it up and headed straight for the front door. Upon opening it, Aaron stood wearing shorts and a t-shirt and an overwrought expression.

“I didn’t want to knock or ring the bell.”

Lacy stepped aside. “Good thinking. Come in. Coffee’s ready.” She closed the door and walked back into the kitchen toward the coffee maker. After pouring two mugs, she handed one to Aaron and took a sip for herself. “Okay. Tell me what you found.”
